Season of streaks continues for Cards after four straight wins

The Cardinals’ varsity baseball team has had some long stretches of ups and downs throughout the season so far. After starting the season with a six-game winning streak, they followed with a streak of seven-straight losses to fall below a .500 winning percentage on the year. However, the Cards have changed their fortunes in recent weeks, finding another win streak in district that extended to four straight after their games last week. Columbus handled TIdehaven to begin the week and then followed with their best offensive performance of the season in a big blowout over Palacios.

Vs Tidehaven, W, 4-0

The Cards got their week started with a shutout victory helped out by a no-hitter by starting pitcher Kaleb Kuhn. Kuhn was effective all game as he reached double-digit strikeouts with 10 on the day on top of not allowing a single hit. The Cards’ offensive attack took advantage of the strong pitching and scored four runs on four hits to create and maintain the lead. Ryan Lewis led the attack with three of those hits, including one that brought home a run.

Columbus opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, followed by a big three-run inning in the third to push the game to its final margin. The Cards relied on their fielding and Kuhn’s strong game to carry them throughout the rest of the game.

Vs Palacios, W, 17-3

Columbus benefitted from an offensive explosion during their Friday evening matchup against the Sharks as they cruised to their biggest victory of the season. Not only did they set a new mark for their highest single-game run total of the season, they also notched their largest margin of victory as they dominated their district opponents. After going scoreless in the first inning, the Cards went on to score in every following inning including a game-high five runs in the second to get the scoring started. The Sharks responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, but Columbus held Palacios scoreless for the remainder of the game while building up a large lead.

Several Cardinals contributed in a big way to the offense as the team combined for 18 total hits. Dylan Zajicek had the top hitting performance of the day with five hits and three RBIs for the offense. Trevor Berger and Connor Geisler added four hits each as they had strong days at the plate as well.
