What do the letters FFA stand for?
In the early 1920’s a group of farm boys from Virginia formed a Future Farmers club and in 1928 the Future Farmers of America was founded. Today agriculture classes are still preparing students for their futures, but over the past 97 years, agriculture has grown to include everything from production farming to agribusiness and from biotechnology to food processing. The face of the FFA has changed as well – what started out as predominately white males with a farming background has changed to a mix of students from different genders, backgrounds and nationalities. In 1965 the New Farmers of America, the organization for African American merged with the FFA, still only boys. But FFA membership was opened to girls in 1969 and they currently make up 44% of the national FFA membership. To reflect this growing diversity, the name of the organization was changed in 1988 from the Future Farmers of America to the National FFA Organization. Now most people just know us as the FFA. But we often get the question what do the letters FFA Stand for?
The letters FFA are tied to the past and still stand for Future Farmers of America – but what the FFA represents is so much more. The FFA represents the fulfillment of dreams. The FFA will help students no matter what they choose to do in the future. The FFA represents the young men and women who are willing to meet the challenges of the future. Young people who are developing themselves to be more responsible citizens and better leaders. The FFA represents opportunity along with responsibility. Youth that strive for leadership, cooperation and citizenship. The FFA represents the greatest agriculture youth organization in the world. But the FFA is nothing without individual member commitment, and the members can’t go it alone. They depend on the support of parents, teachers and the community. The members of the Columbus FFA have been blessed to belong to a community full of the kind of support that will allow them to reach their goals. A community that has provided the Columbus FFA with a great history and will ensure a great future.
