Columbus soccer growing pains

The Columbus Cardinals and Lady Cardinals both had matches against district rivals, Palacios and Hallettsville and went 1-3 in those four games.

It has been an up and down season for the Cardinals and the Lady Cardinals and this past week was no different.

Both the Cards and the Lady Cards struggled to get any sort of offense going in the four games against Palacios and Hallettsvi lle. Considering that both of these teams got started a little bit later than usual these growing pains are expected.

The boys got started the latest because the football team won the State Championship and head soccer coach Matthew Eder was a part of the football coaching staff.

So, they have thrown to the wolves to start the season because they were up against teams that had the luxury of camp and tournament play. Despite that thought the Cards only have one more loss than wins this season including their most recent win over Palacios.

On top of that the Cards are sitting in fifth place in the district just one game behind the Rice Consolidated Raiders just outside of a playoff spot. So, the Cards have had their fair share of struggles during the season, but they are in a great position considering they had hardly any practice time before starting the season.

The Lady Cards are a different story, they are currently on a nine-game winless streak. It is a winless streak and not a losing streak because some of these ended in ties which is not a loss but not a win either.

It is difficult to generate offense at the varsity level and that has been the Lady Cards kryptonite. Over their last two games the Lady Cards scored zero goals and over their last five games they scored only one.

The lack of offense has left the Lady Cards winless in district play so the playoff picture does not look the best but somehow, they are still in the race. With three games left on their schedule the Lady Cards could still make the playoffs but would need some help to get in.

The final week of soccer season is upon us now and both of these teams will be putting their best foot forward to make one last push to secure a playoff spot.
