Cardinals win Bi-District and Area Championships

The Columbus Cardinals boys’ basketball team are heading to round three of the playoffs after winning both the Bi-District and Area Championships this past week.

The Cardinals matched up with Goliad in the Bi-district round of the playoffs and then found themselves up against Randolf in the Area Championship.

Bi-District Championship In the Bi-District round the Cards won by a score of 72-63 against Goliad. The Cards offense was a big story considering one of their players decided to score 50 points.

Grayson Rigdon has done nothing but impress people since he arrived in Columbus in the late spring. In the Bi-District round he scored 50 points and hauled in 13 rebounds and added four assists and four steals to his stat line.

Rigdon has been scoring at a high rate all season long but to get 50 when it matters the most is huge for the Cards as they continue to push deeper into the playoffs. Brody Tribe also had a double-double for the Cardinals in the Bi-District round, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Cards only trailed once and it was early in the game, once they got back on track offensively, they regained control of the game and locked up a victory.

Area Championship

In the Area Championship the Cards cruised to an 83-71 win over Randolf. Rigdon once again led the offense and outperformed his Bi-District round performance.

Rigdon exploded for 58 points against Randolf shooting 59% from the field and 45% from three-point land. He shot 24 free throws as well in the game and made 15 of them to add to his total number of points.

While Rigdon went to work scoring, Camdon Pitchford was helping to facilitate plays and finished the game with eight assists. Pitchford was the passer while Braylon Fisher and Rylan Carruthers each snatched up 10 rebounds each to contribute to the winning effort.

The Cards played their next game against Corpus Christi (London) in round three of the playoffs at Goliad High School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
