City Now in Flood Program; Insurance Will Be Required in Flood Area The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced this week that Columbus has been accepted into the National Flood Insurance Program. The acceptance took effect on Wednesday.
This means that individual property owners are now eligible to buy flood insurance protection at federally subsidized rates, thereby offering more extensive coverage under the expanded program made possible by the 1973 Flood Disaster Protection act.
“We think the new, expanded National Flood Insurance Program offers the best way of protecting property owners from the ravages of floods, while easing the burden on the general public,” said J. Robert Hunter, acting federal insurance administrator.

Rock Island State Bank Closes Doors The Rock Island State Bank closed its doors last Thursday, the State Department of Banking ruiling that the securities held by it were insufficient to protect the depositors.
This bank was organized in 1908 and was one of the first State Banks in the county.
The bank has a capital of $15,000 owned principally by Rock Island and Weimar interests. The deposits amounted to approximately $50,000 and are protected by the State Depositors’ Guaranty Fund.
The failure is blamed on “cattle paper.”
