The Columbus Cardinals varsity hoops team has gotten out to a strong start to the district portion of the schedule. They have not lost a game in four tries and made a big step toward their goal of becoming district champs after a tough win against Industrial. The Cards continue to field one of the best offensive attacks in the district led by the potent trio of Trevor Berger, Colton Pitchford and Cristian Reyna who has developed into a certified threat this season.
Vs Industrial, W, 36-34
The Cards started this game with high intensity on the defensive end. They held Industrial to just six points in the opening quarter, and then followed with an even better performance in the second by holding the Cobras to five points. Columbus also scored into double digits in each of the first two quarters, creating a big, 11-point lead as they went into the halftime break. Industrial began somewhat of a comeback that started with an improved defensive effort. They held the Cards to only four points immediately following halftime and scored a gamehigh 14 points in the fourth as the offensive attack joined their defensive efforts as they cut the lead. The Cobras drew close, but could not get over the hump as they suffered the tight loss that gave Columbus the advantage in the district standings.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by Trevor Berger who has continued to put up numbers and lead the team on offense. He put up 12 points while his explosive running mate Colton Pitchford also made his presence felt with nine points in the low-scoring affair. Cristian Reyna added nine points as well to round out the top three scorers for Columbus.
Vs Hallettsville, W, 60-42
The Cards’ second district win of the week came with slightly less stress as they took the big win over Hallettsville to end the week. The Cards had a strong night offensively, reaching the 60-point mark for the fourth time this season. Columbus’ offensive output has been at a high level recently, with all four of their 60-point games coming in the last five games played.
Cristian Reyna led the way for the offense as his deep range created problems for Hallettsville. He knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to 19 points as the game’s leading scorer. Trevor Berger finished with the team’s second-highest total at 15 points, while Jayden Trapp finished just one point shy of double digits to round out the top three scorers for the Cards.
