Ladycats lose to Lady Tigers

The Weimar Ladycats went on the road to take on the Sealy Lady Tigers to get the softball season started on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The Ladycats found themselves on the losing end of things Tuesday night with a final score of 9-4.

The game started with a rough start for the Ladycats as they recorded zero hits in the first inning. The Lady Tigers defense handled their business on home field and when it was their turn to go on offense, they took the opportunity and ran with it.

With only one out on the board Jade Barton opened the scoring with a two-run homer to go up 2-0. The Ladycats got out of the inning shortly after the home run and after a not so eventful turn on offense the Ladycats were back in the field on defense.

The Lady Tigers offense kept humming along too and added three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded Avery Grigar hit a ball deep into the outfield and used her speed to round the bases stopping at third base for the first triple of the game.

Grigar’s triple brought home all three runners and extended the lead to 5-0 over the Ladycats. In the top of the third the Ladycats offense started to wake up and scored their first run of the game.

With two outs on the board, Taylor Smith hit a ground ball to center field for a single. After that Sam Rangel and Alazay Moreno were both walked which brought Payton Hudec to the plate.

With the bases loaded and two outs all eyes were on Hudec to try to get the Ladycats on the board. She was hit by a pitch which brought a runner home and gave the Ladycats their first run of the game.

The fourth and fifth inning were scoreless for the Ladycats while the Lady Tigers increased their lead by one run in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning the Lady Tigers scored three more runs to make it a 9-1 ball game going into the seventh and final inning.

The Ladycats were not going down without a fight though, they knew it was going to be a steep hill to climb but they were ready to climb it.

In the seventh inning the Ladycats came out swinging, after Shelby Hopkins was walked Olivia Noska hit a single to advance the runners. After Noska’s single Faith Cantwell hit a pop fly that was caught for the first out of the inning.

Then Smith stepped back up to the plate and hit a ball deep for a double, which brought both runners home to cut into the lead. Sitting with a 9-3 score and a runner on second, Rangel once again was awarded first base after getting hit by a pitch.

Moreno was walked after that to load the bases, so with one out, bases loaded and only trailing by six runs the Ladycats were in a great spot to try and complete the comeback.

Zowie Lee hit a single to bring Smith home, but it was too little too late as the Lady Tigers secured the final two outs of the game to finish with a 9-4 final.

The Ladycats will take the loss in stride and will have played their next game by Tuesday, Feb. 18, welcoming in the Columbus Lady Cardinals.
