Go Texan hosts Valentines fundraiser

The Colorado County Go Texan Committee hosted a “Valentines’ Dinner & Dance” fundraiser event at the Colorado County Fairgrounds in Columbus last Friday, Feb. 7.

Tickets were $40 per person as attendees got to enjoy a “Happy Hour” with complimentary beer and wine, with wine provided by the Whistling Duck Winery and a ribeye dinner with sides and dessert served by 360 BBQ, Pete’s Cafe and the Dewberry Cafe.

Live music was danced to and enjoyed by all who came, courtesy of the Chaser Crouch Band.

An auction was held as well, raising $8,625, with all proceeds going towards scholarships for Colorado County students.

Amber McCarthy, County Chairman for Colorado County Go Texan, says the purpose of the fundraiser is to “bring awareness to the county” about the committee and the work they due to aid in the pursuit of education for students after high school.

“Our mission is to provide post-secondary education scholarships for students at Columbus, Rice and Weimar high schools pursuing 4-year degrees, 2-year degrees and trade school certifications,” said McCarthy.

McCarthy says the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo additionally started an Area Go Texan Vocational Scholarship, where the Go Texan committee must “match funds of a minimum of $3,000,” with those funds given back directly to Colorado County students.

“On top of that we also are starting a scholarship for students who have competed on their high school barbecue teams,” said McCarthy. Columbus and Rice are the only two schools with teams at this time, but we are raising funds for that endeavor as well. Overall, this event is meant to bring awareness, education and participation in our future fundraisers to benefit our communities.”

The Colorado County Go Texan additionally hosts a big scholarship fundraiser every year in the fall, with the event set to be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at St Mary’s Nada Hall in Nada.
