Food and fun were on the agenda at the Tuesday, Jan. 28 meeting of the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Members met for a meal prepared from very old recipes. The main course was a delicious and juicy marinated chicken from a 200-year-old recipe. It paired with a tasty wild rice dish from an old family recipe. On the side was a lovely garden salad. For an additional taste, there were various local foraging greens such as dandelions and henbit; pioneers would have used these in the 1800s and of course, bread was served at every meal.
Two versions of no kneed quick breads were offered, a heavy, dense Irish soda bread, and a very quick and easy peasant yeast bread. For the finale, members tasted two desperation desserts, a quite tasty vinegar pie and a no egg, no milk and no butter cake that was extremely moist. All attendees enjoyed this fabulous feast and are thankful that contemporary appliances are available to cook it.
Future meetings include a trip to the Quilt Museum and a tour of the Bill Stein Room and archives at the Nesbitt Library. If you are interested in DRT or membership visit www.drtinfo. org or contact Marilyn Wade ([email protected]).
