County discusses speed limit, replating land

COLUMBUS – The Colorado County Commissioners met in regular session March 13 to discuss land replats and the speed limit on county roads in Precinct 2.

COLUMBUS — The Colorado County Commissioners met in regular session March 13 to discuss land replats and the speed limit on county roads in Precinct 2.

A public hearing was held to discuss and determine any action on the replat of Wild Wing Preserve Phase One Lots 91-97, include right-of-way for addition of Pintail Lane in Phase One boundary and correct the acreage for Lots 39 and 109 in Precinct 1.

A representative spoke about the project saying that clerical errors on the original plat needed to be cleaned up on Lots 39 and 109. He said they were able to complete this. He also said smaller lots are becoming more popular so this is why the scope or size of the project has changed.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Doug Wessels said he has been told the project is going well and that they plan to conduct a second phase. The court approved.

An application was submitted by Heidelberg Materials Southwest Agg LLC to remove approximately 210 linear feet of asphalt road and replace it with approximately 170 linear feet of 12 inches of concrete with two 20 feet of asphalt approaches on the right-of-way of County Road 111 in Precinct 1.

Wessels explained that this project would be in Garwood. He said Heidelberg Materials would like to get materials from the south side going to the north side and will concrete the road so that it stays in good condition where they cross.

The court also discussed setting a date for a public hearing on establishing a 35 MPH speed limit on County Roads 212 and 273 in Precinct 2. Commissioner Ryan Brandt said those two county roads are probably the most traveled gravel roads in his precinct.

“We’re going through and narrowing those roads,” Brandt said. “They were previously graded to the size of a two-lane highway practically, 40 foot in some areas, and we’re pulling them back into 20 foot.”

Brandt added, “There’s a 60 mile an hour speed limit currently on county roads that are not posted. And that’s way too fast on the gravel roads–212 and 273. And on top of that, there was an incident, vehicle accident that probably could have been avoided with a reduced rate of speed here a few weeks ago. So, with talking with the other employees in the precinct and a business that’s on County Road 273, residents on 212 and 273, everybody’s in agreeance out there that I’ve spoken with to lower that speed limit substantially.”

Brandt suggested the public hearing to be scheduled April 10. The court approved of the date.

The court also discussed approving of an agreement for auctioning services between Colorado County Precinct 3 and Mark Switzer Auction Services in Sealy. The court decided to amend the agenda item so that the agreement covers all precincts, and for the time and places of auction to be announced after first one beginning on April 15 at 10 a.m. The court approved of the amended item.

The court also approved a request by Barbara Peterman to use the courthouse grounds for the Columbus Country Market on the last Saturday of each month from March to November.

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce also submitted a request to use the courthouse grounds for an Easter egg hunt on April 1. The court approved.
