Rice Consolidated Independent School District and Weimar Independent School District both held their first board meetings of the month, Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 respectively. In the meetings the two districts went over academic performance over the course of the 2023-2024 school year.
According to the 2024 Federal Report Cards for Rice CISD and Weimar ISD released by the Texas Education Agency, the two school districts were either at or below average in the categories below. Amongst the statistics for the STAAR tests (at meets grade level or above) were: For Rice CISD: 3rd grade reading STAAR district average at 36% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 48%, with only 14% of African American students and 21% of White students meeting requirements.
3rd grade mathematics STAAR district average at 31% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 42%, with 0% of African American students 34% of Hispanic students and 36% of White students meeting requirements.
5th grade reading STAAR district average at 38% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 55%, with only 31% of African American students and 36% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
6th grade mathematics STAAR district average at 25% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 39%, with only 8% of African American students and 14% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
7th grade reading STAAR district average at 25% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 39%, with only 8% of African American students and 14% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
7th grade mathematics had the biggest disparity amongst the grade levels and subjects, with the STAAR district average at 4% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 34%, with 0% of White students, 4% of Hispanic students and 8% of African American students meeting requirements.
High school performances typically did not see significant drop-offs compared to state averages.
For all grades and all subjects in Rice CISD, 35% of all students met requirements compared to a state average of 48%, with only 18% of African American students and 34% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
Weimar ISD in most categories either matched state averages or exceeded them, with exceptions in the following categories.
5th grade science STAAR district average at 26% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 28%, with only 15% of Hispanic students and 42% of White students meeting requirements.
8th grade reading STAAR district average at 35% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 56%, with 0% of African American students and 29% Hispanic students meeting requirements.
8th grade science STAAR district average at 26% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 44%, with 9% of African American students and 17% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
8th grade social studies STAAR district average at 20% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 33%, with 0% of African American students and 8% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.
High school performances typically did not see significant drop-offs compared to state averages and either matched or exceeded state averages in all categories.
For all grades and all subjects in Weimar ISD, 55% of all students met requirements compared to a state average of 48%, with 16% of African American students, 49% of Hispanic students and 73% of White students meeting requirements.
Columbus ISD, for all grades and all subjects had 45% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 48%, with 28% of African American students, 35% if Hispanic students and 56% of White students meeting requirements.
