Cards gear up for postseason with blowout

The Columbus varsity soccer team had a rough loss to start their week of competition, slowing down their progress up the district standings. With the postseason approaching and limited opportunities to claim a spot in the playoff mix, the Cards responded with their biggest victory of the season in a huge blowout that should give the team confidence as they complete the regular season and move on to the state tournament.

Vs Calhoun, L, 6-2

The Cards could not get much to go their way during a tough defeat to Calhoun on March 7. Calhoun’s offense had no problems creating opportunities in front of goal as they quickly created an advantage. The Cards went into halftime with a 4-0 deficit after one of their most difficult halves of the season.

The Cards showed some life in the second half, responding with two goals from Tomas Elias to cut into the lead. However, Calhoun responded with two second-half goals as well to push the score line to its final margin.

Vs Wharton, W, 9-0

After a rather lopsided loss to Calhoun earlier in the week, the importance of getting a win over Wharton was magnified as Columbus battled to maintain a playoff placement in the district standings. The Cards went on to have one of their best performances of the season on both sides of the ball. Not only did they notch their third clean-sheet victory of the campaign, they also finished their season-high count in goals as they were just one goal away from reaching double digits.

As the season comes to an end, the Cardinals will be hoping to carry on the offensive momentum from what could be considered to be their most complete win of the season.
