The Weimar Wildcats picked up a huge district win Thursday night after they defeated the Schulenburg Shorthorns.
The final score was 49-42 in favor of the Wildcats and the game was just as close as the score showed.
“We won this game together it was not one individual person; we all came together and did our work in the summertime and it’s paying off with big wins like this one,” Wildcats head coach Jacob Rehak said. “I am very proud of this team.”
The game started with Schulenburg going on a big offensive run and established a lead very early in the first quarter. They were seemingly automatic from three-point range, and it helped them stack points early on in the game.
By the end of the first the Wildcats were trailing 19-10 and Rehak said they knew Schulenburg was going to come out hot.
“ We just had to weather the storm, we knew they were going to come out ready and get some early points we just had to weather it and settle into the game,” Rehak said.
Schulenburg continued to hum on offense in the second quarter while the Wildcats offense kept things close. At halftime the score sat at 28-29 in favor of Schulenburg, but the second half is where the Wildcats put their foot on the gas.
The Wildcats started to heat up from threepoint land in the third quarter and it allowed them to catch up to Schulenburg on the scoreboard quickly. Led by Camden Morrison and Huxton Kloesel winning the rebound battle for the Wildcats they were able to not only get themselves back into the game but take the lead back from Schulenburg.
Kloesel and Camden Morrison hauled in the rebounds and then got the ball into the hands of Jerron Fisher and Collin Morrison who knocked down some big shots late in the game. Rehak was very pleased with the cohesiveness of his team.
“I told them ‘If y’all believe and buy in, and we play together all throughout the summer and the fall,’ that’s what a team is,” Rehak said. “We can’t wait till November to February to start playing as one, it starts in the summer, and they played together in summer leagues and it is finally coming together.”
The Wildcats always love beating their district rival Schulenburg, but it was made even sweeter for Rehak as he is a Schulenburg graduate.
“I am a Schulenburg graduate I played for their coach, so this is a sweet victory for us,” Rehak said.
The Wildcats wi l l look to keep things rolling in their next game against another district rival, the Shiner Comanches, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, on their home court in Weimar.
