Ladycats lock up a playoff spot

The Weimar Ladycats defeated Schulenburg 4833 on Thursday night to secure their spot in the playoffs.

The Ladycats are back in the playoffs, and they defeated a district rival to do it, and head coach Jenny Fricke said their start was a big factor in the win.

“I thought we came out really strong, we played well in the first half and our pressure wore them down and we were able to get a couple of easy baskets to help us settle in,” Fricke said. “We were also able to hit our free throws tonight which is always nice.”

Fricke said her team got into a bit of foul trouble and said that they had to be mindful of that as the game went along.

“They called a really tight game,” Fricke said. “So, we made some adjustments at halftime and sunk our defense in and our inside presence of Maddie (Luckey) and Jaiya (Cook) they were able to settle us back down clear the boards away and get us back in transition.”

The second half was when the Ladycats hit their stride especially on offense. Schulenburg kept things close because this was a rivalry game after all, but the Ladycats guards stuck out in the second half.

They drove the plays on offense, and they started to knock down some shots. This gave them the confidence to close out the game and Fricke said she was pleased with how her guards have developed this season.

“I have seen quite a bit of improvement from that position, we have Claire (Pavlu) our senior guard, so she is our steadying force,” Fricke said. “But we also have two freshman and a sophomore that are handling the ball a lot, so they have made major strides this season in their development, and I think they have more growth to show us.”

Fricke said she is confident in her team but more importantly they are confident in themselves. She believes her team has the talent and the mental toughness to make a dee push in the playoffs but right now they have to focus on their next game against Shiner.
