Columbus ISD discuss academic performance

2024 Federal Report Card indicate below average

Columbus ISD held a board meeting last Monday, Jan. 13, conducting a public hearing to discuss their academic performance over the course of the last year.

According to the 2024 Federal Report Card for Columbus ISD released by the Texas Education Agency, the school district was either at or below average for several different categories. Amongst the statistics for the STAAR tests (at meets grade level or above) were: 4th grade reading STAAR district average at 44% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 50%, with only 20% of African American students and 27% of Hispanic students meeting requirements.

5th grade science STARR district average at 17% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 27%, with only 11% of African American students, 6% of Hispanic students and 28% percent of White students meeting requirements.

6th grade mathematics STARR district average at 25% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 38%, with 0% of African American students, 22% of Hispanic students and 32% of White students meeting requirements.

8th grade reading STARR district average at 37% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 55%, with 33% of African American students, 28% of Hispanic students and 48% of White students meeting requirements.

8th grade science STARR district averages were the lowest amongst the mentioned categories, sitting at 23% of all students meeting requirements compared to a state average of 42%, a 19% difference, with 0% of African American students, 17% of Hispanic students and 35% of White students meeting requirements.

High school statistics on average either met state averages or exceeded them.

However, two common statistics that fell below state averages were requirements amongst elementary and junior high CWD and EL averages (children with disabilities and English learners) with both categories falling below state averages in nearly every single category.
