Weimar VFW recap recent meeting, celebrate VFW National Home 100th birthday

The Weimar VFW Auxiliary to Post 5875 met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14, with 16 members present. The meeting was opened according to the Ritual by President Charlene Muras.

Email was read by President Charlene Muras regarding Malta, the district newsletter, podium books and reports. A thank-you note was read from Allen and Jeanette Hoelscher for the Christmas stockings they received from the Auxiliary.

There are currently 12 annual members and 24 life members for a total of 36 members.

Dolores Lauck asked members to bring socks, hats and gloves for veterans to be distributed by the VA clinic in LaGrange on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Jeanette Koenig reported that the school kid art contests are underway, valentine cards for hospitalized veterans will be collected from the school next month and reading to school kids will be in March.

She will also be ordering patriotic books for patriotism through literacy for distribution to the schools. Members are encouraged to think of a group activity for the statewide project. Members celebrated the 100th birthday of the National Home with a cake made by Linda Wick.

Monica Stock reported that she mailed 5 birthday cards. Margie Janecka reported that cookies for staff members at 6 locations will be distributed on Jan. 22 along with gloves, hats and socks for veterans.

Members are asked to bring at least 3 dozen cookies in zip lock bags to the VFW Hall Kitchen by 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 22. Charlene Muras reported there are five membership prospects in the works.

Muras also reported that nurse survival kits assembled by Sarah Bansal will be delivered to area nursing facilities on Jan. 22 along with cookies and hats, gloves and socks for veterans. Dolores Lauck made up the $5 grab bags for the quarter auction at the mid-winter meeting Jan. 16 through 18.

Members are asked to bring socks, hats, gloves for veterans and cookies for community workers to the VFW Hall Kitchen on Jan. 22 by 9:00 a.m.

Reading to school kids will be in March, arts contest entries are due by March 31. Valentine cards will be collected in February and the VFW post needs members to help with the barbecque full-meal drive-through dinner fundraiser on February 9. For the Good of the Order, Jeanette Koenig reminded members of lesser- known dates of Jan. 17 Operation Desert Storm and Monday, Jan. 27 Viet Nam Peace Accord and encouraged members to fly the US Flag on Monday, Jan. 20 for MLK Day.

The next meeting will be on Feb.11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Weimar VFW Hall kitchen.
