Lady Cards softball follows blowout win with hard loss

The Columbus Lady Cards’ softball team has had an up-and-down season so far, following up a five-game win streak in the last two weeks of February to dropping three of their last four matchups as they entered March. Last week, the Lady Cards saw both the ups and the downs as they started their week with a strong victory against Industrial, but then followed with a difficult defeat to Hallettsville.

Vs Industrial, W, 4-0 The Lady Cards got their week started with a strong all-around performance from both their offense and their defense. Mayson Post got the start on the mound and pitched all seven innings in a solid effort. She allowed just one hit from the opponent, and the Lady Cards had only two errors as they held on to the shutout.

It took Columbus just a few innings to get settled on the offensive side however. After two scoreless innings, the Lady Cards found a run in the third and another in the fourth to get the scoring started. They tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth as they got plenty of scoring and timely hitting. Bailey Gustus, Ellie Brown, Sophia Wolters and Molly Garcia knocked in runs for the offense with Wolters getting the big hit of the game with a double.

Vs Hallettsville, L, 8-2 Columbus had a much more difficult time in their second game of the week against the Hallettsvi lle Brahmettes. The Lady Cards’ defensive efforts from earlier in the week did not translate as Hallettsville found ways to keep runners on the bases as well as delivering the final hits to bring those runs in. Conversely, Hallettsville successfully limited Columbus’ hitting on the other side of the ball. The Lady Cards refused to be shut out, and they secured two runs of their own to prevent that from happening. However, the result of the game had likely been decided by that point as Hallettsville held on to a decisive advantage.

With a split in their first two district games, the Lady Cards will be looking to stay near the top of the standings and continue their streak of 11-straight postseason appearances.
