The Columbus Lady Cardinals took on the Smithville Lady Tigers Friday afternoon at Rice Consolidated High School.
The Lady Cards finished the game with the score deadlocked at 0-0 making it a little difficult to analyze.
In a scoreless tie it can be hard to break down because not a lot of positives happened but not a lot of negatives happened either. Throughout the game the Lady Cards defense shined the brightest as they fought off the Lady Tigers offense several times.
The Lady Tigers had multiple scoring chances that were thwarted by the Lady Cards and head coach Drew Leopold was pleased with the effort.
“We did a really good job on the defensive side of the ball,” Leopold said. “We did a really good job of keeping the ball away.”
As for the offense they struggled to get things going but they showed flashes of what they are working on and they are starting to see some progress on that side of the ball. Scoring a goal in soccer seems like it is as easy as kicking a ball into a massive goal, but it is a little more complex than that and the Lady Cards are working to find their offensive rhythm going.
“I don’t think we did too bad offensively, there were some opportunities, we took some shots, we just missed them,” Leopold said.
While the Lady Cards will continue to work on their game they also had to battle the harsh conditions on Friday afternoon. It was already cold outside with the recent cold front coming through and on top of that, the wind made the conditions even worse.
“These girls are tough, you know we get to be out here in jackets and warm clothes and they have to wear the game uniform and I am sure they are freezing,” Leopold said. “They battled through it though and I am proud of them for doing that.”
The Lady Cards are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 14, When they take on the Bellville Lady Brahmas at Memorial Stadium.
