Postmortem of Christmas cards

This column is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus — our town.

After Christmas and New Year’s, it occurred to me that I have skipped three years of sending out Christmas cards. One reason is that stamps are so expensive and I don’t seem to find time to look forward and prepare the purchase of cards and make my recipient list. Needlesstosay, there is certainly no time to write a little note about the activities of children and grandchildren. Please don’t get me wrong, I love to know that friends have gone on world trips and for sure, I’m interested in the new glass room that the couple in New Braunfels have built on the east side of the house.

Perhaps the important news was that Colleen was bitten on the shoe by a rabid fox as she stepped out of the car; in all seriousness, it is really scary to know that the fox would not let go. However, she kicked it with the other foot and the fox did eventually let go.

A Christmas card with pictures, particularly one with triplets, catches my eye. Then I realized it’s really three children born in three separate years and there’s a note that their mother is pregnant again.

Christmas cards are truly appreciated and welcomed, even though there may be that one that tells of a dire diagnosis. However, there was not one card announcing a divorce.

These beautiful cards all say “good will” or “glad tidings.” It was particularly meaningful that I received cards from faculty after 30 years of retirement, a reminder of how long true friendships really last. This little epistle may convince me to find a way to market all these “stashed” cards that are hidden in the old buffet.

I really have no idea about your habits with Christmas cards. It’s a good time for me to invent a new filing system. I hope my bad habits do not resemble yours. I have several solutions for my problem, a personal secretary is the best. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and thanks “Big Red.”
