Colorado County Commissioners lifted the burn ban put in place Dec. 9 at a special meeting last Friday, Dec. 27.
The ban’s lifting comes after heavy rain poured down across Colorado County within the past two weeks.
In an order signed by Colorado County Judge Ty Prause at 8 a.m. that morning, the burn ban was rescinded.
“By Order of the Colorado County Judge (under the authority designated by the Colorado County Commissioners Court),” said Prause in the order. “The Order Restricting Outdoor Burning enacted on Dec. 9, 2024, is hereby rescinded. This Order Rescinding the Burn Ban is due to recent rainfall which substantially decreased the public safety concern regarding outdoor burning. It is ordered that the Burn Ban dated Dec. 9, 2024, shall be rescinded effective at 8 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2024.”
The official Colorado County Texas Office of Emergency Management Facebook page clarified that despite the burn ban being lifted, Colorado County is still experiencing drought conditions.
“While the prohibition of the use of fireworks has been lifted as well,” said the Facebook post. “The restrictions for the sale and use of fireworks with “sticks and fins” are still in place.”
It is advised to contact your local volunteer fire departments for any questions concerning controlled burning activities, pile size, safe spaces, preferred extinguishing methods, safe burn distances and what is allowed to be burned.
Residents are also advised to call and let dispatchers know if they are burning anything and where the fire is located. The number to call is 979-732-2388, option two.
