Eagle Lake city council members gave authorization to develop a plan that would see the banning of 18-wheelers driving through downtown Main St. at their recent meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
The authorization was given to city manager Charles “Tink” Jackson to work alongside Tx-DOT on a plan to “make Main Street in downtown EL a no truck through route,” so long as the developmental costs don’t exceed $75,000.
The plan would require a new controlled intersection to be installed right at the Dairy Queen. The proposed plan would be a cost share project according to Jackson, with the city of Eagle Lake being responsible for paying for the design of the intersection.
Council also approved a variance request made by David Burkhalter of Moonside Macaron for the second edition of their “Mystic Moon LARP” event. The variance was for the allowance of overnight camping and use of restrooms as part of the event.
The first edition of the event took place earlier in the year in August and was a huge success, prompting the next event to take place at Veterans Park within the upcoming year in the first week of January.
A night sky resolution was also unanimously passed by council members after expressing their desire to protect the night skies in Eagle Lake.
The passage of the resolution set staff into motion by providing proposed changes to ordinances for non-intrusive lighting requirements for both commercial and residential construction in the future.
The lights would be shining towards the ground and not towards the sky or horizontally, ensuring the stars shine thoroughly and the night sky never goes dim in eagle Lake.
Council members additionally voted to approve expenditures of police forfeiture funds for new computers for patrol units.
The Eagle Lake Police Department’s existing computers needed upgrading and the PD had enough Chapter 59 forfeiture funds to purchase them.
Chapter 59 funds can only be used to purchase police equipment or provide training for officers. Those are funds accumulated by law enforcement agencies when confiscated items are allowed to be sold via court orders (guns, vehicles, cash from drug arrests, etc.)
The next Eagle Lake city council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.
