It’s a bigggg present to wrap ...

A View Of Columbus Through Rose-Colored Glasses

This column is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus – our town.

The title lets one know there are many people to acknowledge when you win a state championship. This article’s main topic is to try to thank all those who contributed to the Columbus Cardinals winning the Division 3A I State Championship in football.

It’s impossible to thank all of you who followed the Cardinals to Madisonville and Hitchcock. If one starts with the closest to the heart of the team, one would, of course, begin with the coaches.

In some cases, the public is charmed by the “Schobel” name. Matt Schobel, the Columbus Cardinals football head coach, was honored by winning the championship.

He enjoyed coaching with his cousin, Aaron Schobel. The cousins are joined by another cousin, “Bo”, a member of the Columbus School Board. The history of Columbus football includes many well-known players, coaches, and administrators.

Baumgart, Hartley and Giddens come to mind. The community generously participates in decorating windows. Patrons know the thunderous “GO BIG RED” and another popular cheer, “TWO BITS, FOUR BITS”.

The depth of emotions for Columbus’ injured players and the death of Aleks Medrano #62 strengthened the team. The 2024 team will have great influence on all the students who follow.

It seems we did it “right” and that this little space in time is ours to enjoy. Coincidentally, if you add the numbers of the final score of the game against Malakoff, 48 + 14, the total would be 62. Does that number sound familiar? Thank you, Lord, for all the moments of community spirit. We would like to especially thank the gentlemen, Pitchford and Massey, for providing buses to transport our fans to the AT&T Stadium in Arlington where the game was played.

Cheers to Adam Schobel and John Schobel for receiving the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game awards, respectively. The name “Schobel” goes on.
