Cards win first district game of the year

The Columbus Cardinals improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in district play after they defeated the Yoakum Bulldogs 56-38.

The Cards started their tough district schedule on the right foot by picking up a huge win in the first game.

Columbus had a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and was in the driver’s seat to run the Bulldogs out of the building. By halftime the Cardinals had only given up one touchdown and a two-point conversion while adding 21 more points to their lead.

With a 42-8 lead at halftime, the Cards were firmly in control of the game and when the second half came around Columbus was able to use some of their reserve players. Giving the players a great opportunity to gain some valuable experience and kept their seniors fresh for the tough district schedule.

The Cards offense was flying around the field all night and hung 56 on the Bulldogs in their first district game. Adam Schobel had a stellar night under center completing 13 of 15 passes for 313 yards and five touchdowns.

Cam Pitchford was Schobel’s top target Friday night catching six passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Braylon Fisher was also heavily involved in the Cardinals passing attack, catching two passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Grayson Rigdon continued to put together a fantastic senior season. He carried the ball 10 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

As for the defense, John Schobel has been on an unbelievable run these past couple games. He rushes the passer extremely well, he can drop in coverage, tackles in the open field well and creates turnovers.

The defense followed his lead and because of that, they held the Bulldogs to only eight points in the first half which ultimately helped the Cards collect their first district win.

The Cards will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 25, taking on Hitchcock in Hitchcock with a kickoff time of 7:30 p.m.
