For their November meeting, the Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) welcomed local historian and author, Roger Wade to speak. Mr. Wade’s presentation was on Sears kit homes that were built locally in the early 1900s.
All materials would be identified, marked, and assembled in a kit to be shipped by railcar, making Columbus an ideal spot for delivery. The home would then be built on site somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle by the purchaser, now new homeowner. These kits ranged from simple basic structures to the massive 2900 sq. ft. Magnolia. We are quite fortunate to have some great examples around the county.
Also in attendance were DRT District 8 Representative, Milli Pope, and her alternate, Kreschendalyn Backus encouraging volunteerism and presenting a new focus on younger women within DRT (STARS) to include monthly zoom meetings and Facebook and Instagram pages.
Two new members were also inducted into the chapter, Susan Purcell and Kathleen Pustejovsky.
