Ladycats come in second at Brazos Tournament

The Weimar Ladycats went 2-2 at the Brazos Tournament where they played the likes of Boling, Bellville, Gonzales and La Grange.

The Ladycats played well but learned a lot about themselves as a team in the process.

Vs. Boling, W, 34-31

The Ladycats got things started against Boling for their first game of the tournament.

The Ladycats had a bit of a rough first half but made adjustments at halftime and things looked a lot better in the second half.

“We played a lot better in the second half, defense was better, rebounding way better and we moved the ball really well on offense,” Ladycats head coach Jenny Fricke said.

Rebounding was something that stuck out when watching the game. On both ends of the floor Jaiya Cook was dominating the boards.

“Jaiya is so good in the paint for us she knows that is her role and she plays it very well for us,” Fricke said. “She is a big asset for us.”

While the Ladycats enjoyed their victory things started to get a little sticky in the second game against Bellville.

Vs. Bellville, L, 39-38 Losing by one point always stings but it stung even more for the Ladycats because they just fell apart in the closing minutes of the third and all of the fourth.

Offensively the Ladycats came out hot and ended the first quarter with a very comfortable 15-5 lead. The Ladycats continued to press on offense, but Bellville’s offense also woke up and they started to cut into the Ladycats lead leaving the game with a 24-17 score, in favor of the Ladycats, at halftime.

The Ladycats were outscored 22-14 in the second half, and it was ultimately the reason for their demise.

“We know we did not play our best game, too undisciplined and we all know that,” Fricke said. “When you play that way, teams are going to find a way to beat you and Bellville did that.”

After the loss the Ladycats bounced back with another close win over Gonzales, 54-52, sending them to the championship game against La Grange.

Vs. La Grange, L, 66-45

The Ladycats came up short in the championship game against La Grange to take home second place.

La Grange is a larger school but that is the whole point of these tournaments, to play a good variety of teams and skill levels. La Grange usually has a competitive basketball team, but the Ladycats took on the challenge.

La Grange walked away with a victory and the Championship, but the Ladycats gained a lot of valuable film to break down next week at practice and try to grow from the loss.

The Ladycats will be back on the court on Tuesday, Dec. 17, when they welcome in Ganado for their first district game of the year.
