The Columbus Lady Cardinals traveled to compete in the Schulenburg Tournament this past weekend and they posted a 6-0 record.
The Lady Cards started the tournament with a big win over Smithville and carried that momentum into the rest of their games.
The Lady Cards defeated Smithville 53-49, there were questions about what this team was going to look like after they lost Karlee Mathis and Sage Thomas to graduation. Those questions were answered in game one of this tournament.
This team is still playing at a high level they are moving the ball and getting open looks on offense. Then on defense they are completely negating any sort of offense the opposition tries to set up.
In games two and three it was more of the same from the Lady Cards, they went on to beat St. Paul, 44-27, and East Bernard, 45-38. The Lady Cards were on fire with a 3-0 record and came into their fourth game ready to make it an even four wins in a row.
The Lady Cards did just that, they defeated Luling 54-34 to cap off their fourgame winning streak with a 20-point win then went on to beat Bellville and Brazos 61-33 and 62-15. Head coach Mike Albers was impressed with his team to say the least.
“We have played some really good teams here and this game was no different, Luling is a very good team,” Alber said. “We started out a little sluggish defensively, but we got better as the game went on and we were able to close it out.”
The cushion on the scoreboard allowed Albers to get his reserve players involved a little bit more and he said to be able to do that so early in the season is extremely valuable.
“It really is a good thing to get them in because we never know when we are going to have to use them more throughout the season,” Albers said. “As much as we can get them in that is a great thing for our team.”
Albers pointed out that even though it was a 20-point win there were a lo of positives but there were still some negatives and room for improvement.
“Positives, when we would finally run back like we are supposed to I thought we did a pretty good job on defense,” Albers said. “Passing I thought could have been better, there was a lot of deflections that we can avoid, we just don’t fake enough, so there are definitely things we can work on.”
The Lady Cards will be getting back to work on practice on Monday but will return to game action on Tuesday, Dec. 10, against the Edna Cowgirls.
