The Columbus Lady Cardinals currently hold a record of 5-4 after they competed in the Anderson- Shiro tournament.

It has been a season of ups and downs so far for the Lady Cardinals so let’s jump right into it.

The Lady Cards started the season on a high note winning their first four games of the year in pretty convincing fashion. They opened their season by beating St. Joseph 67-35 on their home court.

The Lady Cards picked up right where they left off last season, with a high-flying offense and a defense that suffocates teams. There were a couple of questions surrounding the team after they lost Karlee Mathis and Sage Thomas but those were answered in game number one.

Anaya Gardner wanted to start her sophomore season off with a bang and show case her skills that she learned while attending Spurs starting point guard, Chris Paul’s camp this summer. She was a focal point of the offense knocking down multiple different shots from multiple different areas.

Her production carried over into game two when players like Ella Berger, Ava Heffley, Candee Pitchford and Thea Schobel started to get more involved. With players stepping up and Gardner doing her thing the Lady Cards rolled through the next three games beating teams by an average of 17 points and beat Wharton, Brazos and Yoakum along the way.

They carried that confidence into the Anderson- Shiro tournament and unfortunately their momentum was derailed.

The Lady Cards matched up against very talented and competitive schools by design because it will help them in their preparations for their district schedule when the time comes. Unfortunately, their record took a hit because of this tournament where they won only one of their five games.

After they started 4-0 the first loss is always the worst loss, and it came against Bremond 55-53 in the first game of the tournament. It was the Lady Cards first loss and it was only by two points but could never recover and dropped thier next two games to Franklin (56-46) and Bremond again (6658).

The Lady Cards bounced back with a win over host Anderson-Shiro (46-33) but their celebration was short lived as they dropped their next game to Lexington 49-33. The tournament was a bit of a wake up call for a team that has playoff aspirations and they will be looking to get back in the win column after the holiday.

The Lady Cards will be back in action December 3, against El Campo and then again on Dec. 10, against Edna.
