Hello everyone and welcome back to the Huddle where this week I am going to be talking about Rice’s journalism department.
Rice has a journalism class led by former Editor at the Colorado County Citizen, Alesia Woolridge, and while she is amazing, I’m going to be talking about her students today.
These kids are eager to dive headfirst into the world of journalism and we at the Citizen love giving them opportunities. It’s a good way for them to receive hands-on training as well as build their resumes up in the process.
They welcome the opportunities and when presented to them they pick it up and run with it. Don’t believe me? Let’s look at a few examples then shall we.
If you follow us on Facebook, you may have already seen a few of her students, Javon Manciaz and Jonathan Morales, in action as they filmed a couple of halftime reports this season. One week they told me not to film a halftime report because they wanted to do it. Who am I to tell them no?
I will always say yes to a young journalist who is trying to make a name for themselves and get strong early experiences that will help them down the line. I was awarded that luxury when I was in school and vowed that if I had the power, I would do the same for the kids in my area.
Looking deeper I bet none of you noticed that Jaden Newman, photographer extraordinaire, also has a few photo credits this season.
Newman shoots every sport, basketball, volleyball, track, football and even soccer. He’s a wizard with a camera in his hand and if you have not seen his work yet you will have a chance to very soon.
In the coming weeks the Citizen will be putting out the Colorado County Insider magazine. Inside the magazine will feature a story written by two Rice journalism students, Jon Woods and Paul Valles, with all the photos coming from Newman.
So, when you see the magazine out in circulation here soon, pick up a copy and just take a look at the work these students have done. I have had the privilege of being able to read their story already and I am so excited for you, our readers, to get your eyes on it and see just how talented these young journalists are.
Thank you all so much for reading the Huddle, I will see you guys’ next time.
