Ladycats have strong tourney following blowout win

The Weimar Ladycats’ softball team has been turning out some big wins as they try to continue off the momentum from their deep postseason run last year. Their most recent feats over the week include a few no-hitters, blowout wins and double-digit scoring games as they took just one loss over the week that started with a big win over Schulenburg and ended with a dominant tournament run in San Marcos.

Vs Schulenburg, W, 14-0 The Ladycats did not have much to worry about against their first opponents of the week as they dominated from the first pitch. Star pitcher Reagan Wick had an impressive day on the mound, dealing out 18 strikeouts and pitching in all seven innings during a hitless effort by the Lady Horns. Wick also had a team-high four runs batted in to help out the offense as well.

Vs Iowa Park, W, 2-0

The start of the San Marcos tournament on March 9 brought a much tighter challenge than Weimar experienced earlier in the week against Schulenburg. The Ladycats got another strong game from Reagan Wick and the impressive defense around her to keep their second opponent in a row scoreless. Weimar scored their only two runs in the first inning, batted in by Paige Pavlu and Wick before they went on to hold on to the narrow lead for the remaining innings.

Vs East Central, L, 10-2 The Ladycats’ imposing defense to start the tournament could not hold up into their second game of the day as they faced off against a difficult opponent. The teams played through three scoreless innings before the Lady Eagles broke open the scoring in the fourth inning with four runs. Weimar responded with two runs in the bottom the fourth to try to cut the deficit, but East Central scored six more runs in the fifth and held the Ladycats scoreless at the bottom of the fifth to force the officials to call an early final according to the tournament’s rules.

Vs Monterey, T, 0-0

The defensive effectiveness returned for Weimar in their final game of the first day. Wick notched another double-digit strikeout effort and the Ladycats generally outplayed their opponents with four hits on the offensive end as well. However, they could not turn their hits into runs as the teams played through a scoreless game and finished tied with no extra innings due to tournament rules.

Vs Bloomington, W, 17-0 The Ladycats must have been well-rested to start the second day of the San Marcos tournament as they started with their biggest inning of the season and what will likely be their shortest game of the season. They scored an incredible 14 runs in the first inning and then followed with three more runs in the second. Bloomington could not find any offense in any of the three innings they had available, and the officials called the game before heading into the bottom of the third. Kylie Helmcamp led the way with three RBIs on the offense.

Vs Hudson, W, 6-0

Weimar once again got a hot start to begin the final day of the tournament. They scored four runs in the first inning and then followed with two more runs in the second to reach their final scoreline. The Lady Hornets were held to just two total hits the rest of the way as Weimar secured their second shutout victory in a row.

Vs Austin, W, 8-6

Weimar’s most competitive game came near the end when they faced off against a formidable opponent. Like the other games of the tourney, the Ladycats got off to a quick start with five runs in the first two innings. Austin kept within range with one run in each of those innings, but they finally turned the tide with a four-run inning in the third to take a 6-5 lead over Weimar. The Ladycats responded with a clutch three-run fourth to take the lead and secure the victory. Paige Pavlu and Taylor Smith batted in two runs each for the offense.

Vs Navarro, W, 10-0

The final game of the tournament featured another dominating effort by the Ladycats as Reagan Wick pitched another no-hitter to shut out Navarro. She got support from an offense that made a habit of burying teams early in games as the Ladycats poured on eight runs to get the game started in the top of the first inning. They claimed the victory after two more runs in the third inning and another shut out period as well.
