The Weimar Ladycats started their 2024 basketball season this week and came away with one win and one loss to start the year.

The Ladycats played both games on the road against Nordheim and La Grange.

@ Nordheim, W, 80-16

The Ladycats opened up the season on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Nordheim where they were hoping to start the year on the right foot.

Picking up a win int he first game of the year can be a huge boost to a team’s confidence and the Ladycats knew that. They knew it a little too well actually.

The Ladycats scored 80 points in their victory over Nordheim, yes, 80 points. It was a great team effort with the Ladycats having plenty of upper classmen leadership leading the way.

Clarie Pavlu and Camila Rangel are both seniors who are taking a ton of pride in their leadership role for the Ladycats. They are aided by juniors Da ’Dreanna Granger, Kylie Ohnheiser, Madison Luckey and Jaiya Cook all know the standard that head coach Jenny Fricke has set for the team and did an excellent job of holding themselves and their teammates to that standard.

That level of accountability helped the Ladycats on their way to the first win of the season. While they were pleased with the victory a tougher challenge lied ahead in game number two.

@ La Grange, L, 44-32

Game two saw the Ladycats lose their first game of the season by only 12 points.

The La Grange Lady Leopards are a bigger school that plays at the 4A level instead of the 2A level where the Ladycats normally play. The Lady Leopards are also coming off of a season where they posted a 10-2 record in district and most of the players from that team returned this season.

But Weimar will always punch above their weight class if it will help them long run and this game did exactly that.

It’s the first loss of the year and losses are never fun, that is something everyone in athletics can agree on. But the good news about the loss is it provides plenty of opportunity to learn and get better.

The Ladycats will shake off the loss and quickly re focus their attention to their home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 19, against Brazos.

Jenny Fricke draws up a play for her team during a timeout.
