The Columbus Community Hospital hosted their Diabetes Conference and Health Fair at the Columbus Wellness Center last Thursday, Nov. 7, in recognition of November as Diabetes Awareness Month.

Free A1C screenings were conducted for attendees, with multiple presentations given by keynote and guest speakers about both types of diabetes.

The presentations provided information on both types of diabetes, diabetes in adolescents, how to avoid becoming diabetic and curbing prediabetes and how to manage diabetes if already diagnosed through dietary and lifestyle changes.

Stephen Pont, Medical Director for the Center for Public Health Policy and Practice at the Texas Department of State Health Services, and William B. Perkison, Assistant Professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health, were the two keynote speakers at the conference, educating attendees on diabetes management strategies, nutrition, exercise, weight, sleep and stress management, prevention and more.

Attendees were also fed a healthy lunch curated by hospital staff and Christina Little, the hospitals dietician with over 20 years of experience in diabetic nutrition, to fit into diabetic diets, showcasing how ingredients can be adjusted to still satiate appetites and curb cravings while fitting within dietary guidelines.

The Columbus Community Hospital will be hosting their Medicare Benefits Counseling Sessions event next Monday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
