The Columbus Cardinals concluded the regular season with a 38-0 win over Hempstead on Friday, Nov. 8.

The Cardinals finished the season with only one loss on their record and will be going back to the playoffs.

The Cards defense played a strong game where they forced four turnovers and shut out a district foe. After starting last week’s game against Hallettsville slow the Cards defense came out Friday with some fire and was in Hempstead’s face early.

The Cards were able to force three fumbles against Hempstead and almost completely negated their rushing attack. Hempstead decided to advance the football through the air because of it btu Xavier Woods was there for the Cards to come away with an interception.

On the offensive side of the ball the Cards were flying all over the field where they jumped out to a 14-0 lead. By the end of the first half the Cards’ lead was extended to 30-0.

Coming into the second half the Cards utilized several different players at quarterback and running back because of the large lead. Adam Schobel completed nine of 14 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

His production allowed Jack Schobel and Adan Reggins to take a few snaps under center. Jack Schobel completed two of his three passes for 21 yards while Riggins completed one of his two pass attempts for 40 yards.

This gave the Cardinals’ fans a little bit of a glimpse of the future with this being Adam Schobel’s senior season.

With Graysin Rigdon still sidelined the Cards used six different running backs on Friday night to give Rigdon some extra rest and give the rest of the running backs some game experience. Bryan Salazar, Will Fitzgerald, Domynick Hawk, Adan Reggins, Jeremiah Martinez and Troy Kohleffel all six of these players carried the ball at least once for the Cards Friday night.

They combined for 27 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns which helped the Cards on their way to a 38-0 win over Hempstead.

The Cards now look towards their first-round playoff game against Cameron on Friday, Nov. 15, at Smithville High School.
