The Weimar Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire along I-10, east of Country Road 213 that left zero dead but a family without their home last Thursday, Oct. 31.
Schulenberg residents Tremain Chandler and Mary-Lyn Mae Luhrs Chandler, alongside their two dogs were luckily not home at the time, but lost everything inside their home to the fire on the afternoon of Halloween.
“Our dogs and us are okay,” said Tremain in a Facebook post. “But everything else is gone.”
The couple are unsure how the fire first started but suspect a lightning strike hit the house due to the inclement weather that day, causing the blaze. Mae Luhrs Chandler says she was at work while her husband was running errands with the dogs, and by the time they and firefighters arrived at their home, the house was gone.
“The fire had to have started around 2:30 p.m.,” said Mae Luhrs Chandler. “Firefighters got there as soon as they could, but by the time they did the house was already burnt down to the ground. We lost everything we had.”
The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department was also on scene assisting the Weimar VFD. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
