The Columbus Cardinals welcomed in the Hallettsville Brahmas for a district matchup at on Friday, Nov. 1, at Memorial Stadium.

Before the opening kickoff the Cardinals honored the memory of Aleks Medrano who passed away a few weeks ago by retiring his number 62 forever.

Medrano is officially the last person ever to wear the number 62 for the Cardinals and the team rallied around that fact on Friday night.

The Cards started the game on defense and Hallettsville came ready to make a statement on the opening drive. The Cardinals defense started a little slow on the first drive of the game.

Hallettsville was getting everything on offense in both the passing and the rushing attack, picking up chunk yardage seemingly on every play. Hallettsville worked their way down the field and even- tually punched in the opening score.

That does not seem too detrimental for the Cards because it is just one touchdown, they can get that with little to no problem because their offense is so potent. The problem was Hallettsville shaved a lot of time off the clock with their opening drive.

The first quarter was under four minutes left on the clock when the Cards offense finally got their hands on the ball. The Cards were moving the ball down the field but were unable to score a touchdown and even the score up before the quarter ended.

Trailing 6-0 going into the second quarter the Cards were not panicking at all because they were sitting inside the 10-yard line before they flipped the field. Bryan Salazar punched in the Cards opening score to open the second quarter, but this was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Cards defense bounced back in a big way in the second quarter, they kept the Hallettsville offense behind the sticks and forced several punts. The Cards offense made up for lost time in the first quarter with their opportunities and scored three touchdowns in the span of seven minutes.

The Cards continued the offensive pressure to come to a final score of 42-12. Salazar finished the game with 13 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Adam Schobel had a big game as well completing nine of his 13 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns that were caught by Braylon Fisher and Elijah Usher. Schobel also contributed to the rushing attack with three carries for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cards will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 8, taking on Hempstead in their final district game of the year.
