A former 10-year veteran of the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office turned himself in to authorities on Oct. 1 after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a person behind bars.
Tomas Ramirez, 50, had a warrant issued for his arrest after being charged with violating the civil rights of a person in custody or under supervision, allegedly having an improper relationship with an inmate, a second-degree felony.
On Sept. 23, the Colorado County Detention Center received information about the alleged relationship between Ramirez and the inmate. Due to Ramirez’s connection with the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Rangers were called in to aid in investigating the case.
An affidavit was submitted to Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Judge Billy Hefner who subsequently issued a warrant after authorities determined there was probable cause.
Colorado County Sheriff R.H. Wied shared his personal sentiment regarding his former colleague, condemning Ramirez’s actions.
“This type of behavior is disgraceful and does not represent the core values of this office or the members of this agency,” said Wied. “We condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms.”
Ramirez was released on a $100,000 bond after turning himself in.
As the case is still under investigation, the name of the inmate will not be released at this time.
