This article is dedicated to acknowledging examples of positives that express the community spirit of Columbus – our town.
When my husband, Bob, and I spent time in South Africa, we came home with trinkets and quite a few remembrances that have enriched our lives. One of the nicest remembrances was the word used by waitresses or other service-oriented workers when responding to a “thank you”.
The response was almost always “PLEASURE” as opposed to NO PROBLEM”. It became a favorite happening and we looked forward to hearing that response... “PLEASURE”. Of course we brought it back.
It was such a pleasure for us to share this concept with friends and certainly with waitresses. Occasionally we would hear the word by happen-so. We always used the opportunity to reinforce the verbiage.
I found that there were other ways to take advantage of this habit... using “pleasure” to reinforce good service in a written note is twice as effective. Try writing a note using this complimentary word and see the smiles appear.
Now, I’m pretty sure I heard you say, “who has time to do all of that stuff?” Yes, there is a little more time spent. However, the spirit in this practice is so worth your time.
In my West Texas language, I “double dog dare” you to try the pleasure concept at least once this week. We all need some motivation to share special thanks in the cafeteria, the hardware store, or the meat market.
Columbus is a special little country town. Our habits are generally quite friendly. Let’s add “pleasure” to our vocabulary. All of a sudden, “NO PROBLEM” will disappear.
