National Family Caregivers Month in November is a time to recognize and honor the dedicated people across Texas and beyond who provide compassionate care to their loved ones.
There are 3.1 million caregivers in Texas alone whose support is estimated to be worth $41 billion overall, according to AARP. These caregivers provide a support system to older Texans and help their loved ones stay active, prepare meals, schedule appointments and manage medications.
Many caregivers value their role because of the strengthened relationship they have with their loved one and the feeling they are making a difference. But the benefits of being a caregiver even extend into the workplace.
According to a recent study by the Harvard Business Review, caregivers bring the empathy, efficiency and persistence learned while caregiving into their work outside the home. Employers who hire and champion the needs of caregivers can benefit from these valuable skills.
Caregivers sometimes require additional training, support and services to best care for their loved ones. Strengthen The Care You Give is a campaign overseen by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission that raises awareness about the role of the family caregiver, issues associated with caregiving, and available services and supports. The campaign also includes a range of media options and marketing materials such as editable templates and social media graphics.
