Raiders lose for first time this season

EAST BERNARD BRAHMAS 31, RICE RAIDERS 23

The Rice Raiders perfect season came to an end on Friday following a 31-23 loss to East Bernard.

The loss is the Raiders first of the season and first of their district season leaving them with a 1-1 record in district play.

Defensively the Raiders had a pretty solid game all things considered. They did give up 31 points and 333 yards, but still made an impact on the game.

The Raiders’ formidable defensive front did not make as much noise as they have been doing so far this season. East Bernard was able to run and pass the ball effectively to the tune of 168 rushing yards and 170 passing yards.

Despite East Bernard’s offense having an efficient night the Raiders did take the ball away. Three fumble recoveries and an interception made for a big night for the Raiders defense.

The defense had a big night, but the offense struggled to score throughout the night, and it was a big factor in this loss. Kordae Johnson had a particularly tough game completing just six of his 18 pass attempts (33%) and three interceptions.

This kept the Raiders defense out on the field for longer periods of time and East Bernard was able to take advantage of the short fields because of the interceptions. The Raiders offense did move the ball though and scored points Friday night.

Dyren Johnson led the way for the Raiders carrying the ball 13 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. In addition to that Kordae Johnson and RJ Meyers helped out in the running game and combined for six carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.

The Raiders offense struggled to get a rhythm going but there is no panic on that team following their first loss of the year. They knew they would have to still learn some tough lessons this season despite some early success.

The Raiders will be back in action next week on Friday, Oct. 11, when they welcome Brazos to their home field for their third district game of the year.
