The Columbus Lady Cardinals won both of their district games this week to improve to 7-0 in district play this season.
The Lady Cards got to enjoy homecourt advantage against Edna for their first game this week and then hit the road to take on Palacios for their second game.
Vs. Edna, W, 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21) In their first game of the week on Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Lady Cards had a top five district matchup against third seed Edna Cowgirls.
The game started with the courted tilted in the Lady Cards favor and it looked like they were in a prime position to sweep Edna. The Lady Cards dominated the first set and came away with a 10-point win.
In the second set, the Cowgirls showed why they are so high in the standings. Their offense started to come to life in the second set racking up points which tested the Lady Cards defense.
The Lady Cards offense kept things close, but the Cowgirls came away with a 25-23 win to tie the match up at a set a piece.
The third and fourth set had similar scores of 25-21 in favor of the Lady Cards. In these two sets is where the Lady Cards depth shined through.
The trio of Gracie Schobel, Taylor Morrow and Harper Gerik combined for 37 kills against Edna and were huge factors in closing the match out in four sets.
The Lady Cards were feeling confident after their win but they were just getting started and began preparing for Palacios.
@ Palacios, W, 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-13) Coming off their victory over Enda earlier in the week the Lady Cards traveled to Palacios for their second district game of the week.
The Lady Cards had a very efficient game on the offense side of the ball and swept Palacios in just three sets. Schobel, Morrow and Gerik again had great days combining for 34 kills and Kyndal Kuhn even got in on the fun with six kills of her own.
Riley Kainer and Abigail Fisher played major roles in the win over Palacios as well. Kainer recorded 22 assists in the contest while Fisher was not too far behind with 14 assists in the Lady Cards win on Friday.
Caylie Neisner’s impact on these games was evident as well as she recorded a total of 30 digs between the two games giving her team plenty of opportunity to score.
The Lady Cards are rolling through district and will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Rice to take on the Lady Raiders.
