Bicyclist killed in I-10 crash

A bicyclist was killed while riding on I-10 after being hit by a vehicle late Saturday night, Oct. 5 The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department responded to a crash that occurred at 9:22 p.m. on I-10 westbound between the exits off 698 and 699 in Columbus after a Honda Accord was unable to avoid striking the bicyclist, following a lane change by an 18-wheeler.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Stephen Woodward, who presides over Colorado County, the bicyclist died on scene and was transferred to the Travis County medical examiner’s office.

Woodward says the driver of the Honda observed the 18-wheeler change lanes to avoid hitting the bicyclist, who Woodward states should not have been travelling on the highway as riding a bike on a controlled access highway is against the law.

“The bicyclist was on the roadway when he should not have been on it,” said Woodward. “You cannot ride a bicycle on the freeway.”

Witness testimony given by the driver of Honda according to Woodward indicated that the Honda was unable to avoid hitting the bicyclist as a result of the sudden lane change, striking the bike in the front right corner and launching the bicyclist who ended up in the eastbound lane.

As of press time, the victim has not been identified.
