LADY CARDINALS VOLLEYBALL
The Columbus Lady Cardinals improved to 5-0 in their district schedule after they handed losses to Yoakum and Hallettsville.
Both wins were massive for the Lady Cards as they strengthened their grip on the top spot in the district standings.
@ Yoakum, W 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-18)
The Lady Cards started their week on the road in Yoakum and they went right to work from the opening serve.
Their offense found their footing early in the game and never looked back. They were aided by massive games from Taylor Morrow and Harper Gerik.
Both Morrow and Gerik are problems for opposing defenses and against Yoakum they showed exactly why. They combined for a total of 28 kills and had 61 combined attacks at the net.
Riley Kainer and Abigail Fisher played a big role in setting their teammates up for kills, combing for 37 setter assists. Caylie Neisner contributed 24 digs to the winning effort and in just three sets the Lady Cards claimed their fourth district win of the year.
They were riding high and were scheduled to play their next game against a familiar foe but the perk was that they would have home court advantage.
Vs. Hallettsville, W 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21)
In their second game of the week the Lady Cards welcomed in district rivals, the Hallettsville Lady Brahmas.
Fans of the Lady Cards and the Lady Brahmas know how intense these matchups can get and this one did not disappoint. Hallettsville jumped out to an early lead on the Lady Cards and took the home crowd almost completely out of the game.
Hallettsville held a 14-9 lead over the Lady Cards and were in prime position to steal the first set from the Lady Cards. The Lady Cards are battle tested though and no amount of adversity frightens them.
They came storming back to win the first set and did not look back from that moment on. Morrow and Gerik again had great games racking up 24 kills together while Fisher and Kainer combined for 28 assists.
The Lady Cards closed out the final two sets of the game and sent the Lady Brahmas home with a district loss in hand.
The Lady Cards are scheduled to take on Edna on Tuesday, Oct. 1, where they will try and continue to stack up district wins.
