We have all heard the news surrounding the Harris County elections. I receive questions almost daily on “what the heck is going on over there.” My answer is “I can only answer for what happens here in Colorado County.” This week I had the opportunity to go to Harris County and be a part of their new “Train the Trainer” program.
I, and another seasonal staff member, spent two days in Houston taking the poll worker training provided to Harris County poll workers and then providing feedback and assessing their training program.
Harris County and Colorado County obviously follow the same laws; however, the process and procedures are vastly different. This is based upon resources and the sheer number of registered voters and volume of voter turnout. I had many reasons for accepting the invitation to assist, however, I think my strongest desire to attend was based on the 100% differences in our counties. Colorado County has 11 election day polling locations and is precinct specific voting; in November we have 96 poll workers. Harris County has 700 election day polling locations and is county wide voting; in November they will have over 7,000 poll workers.
I am not sure if their numbers are mind blowing or mind numbing. What I do know is that training that many individuals to do a very important detailed orientated job is a huge undertaking. Taking two days away from my office, away from you, was not easy this time of year. But I am happy that I did it. I am pleased that we could provide feedback, encouragement, and have the personal knowledge of what is being provided to those poll workers. Rebecka LaCourse Colorado County Election Administrator
