Columbus man surrenders on murder charge

Columbus man surrenders on murder charge

Johnson turned himself in same day after victim was shot

A Columbus native charged with murder in the shooting death of a man turned himself in the same day of the incident.

Nijay Johnson, 21, surrendered to authorities early Sunday after a warrant was issued by Municipal Court Judge Leonard Peters.

Keandre M. Hurd, 26, also of Columbus, succumbed to his wounds after being rushed to Columbus Community Hospital.

According to investigators, officers at 2:53 a.m. Sunday responded to a call in the 1600 block of Fannin Street for a gunshot victim. An assailant had fired multiple shots at Hurd, police said. At this time, no motive has been given in the case and details remain few.

Later that day, Johnson turned himself in to the Columbus Police Department and was taken to the Colorado County Detention Center.

Johnson remained behind bars Tuesday in lieu of posting a $150,000 bond.

Johnson, who graduated from Columbus High in 2022 and Hurd in 2017, were both members of the Cardinal basketball and football teams in their time.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department at 979732-3351.
