Holy Cross defeats Wildcats

Holy Cross defeats Wildcats

ANTONIO HOLY CROSS 27, WEIMAR WILDCATS 17

The Weimar Wildcats fall to 1-3 on the season after a 27-17 loss to San Antonio Holy Cross on Friday night.

The Wildcats are coming off a 35-0 loss to the Rice Raiders and were looking to improve in their week four matchup and despite what the scoreboard says, they did.

Obviously, the Wildcats would have liked to be on the other side of this game and even up their record at 2-2. Unfortunately that’s not how things went but there were some positives the Wildcats can carry with them into their bye week.

Let’s start with the defense because they have been playing their tails off these past two games. They have been on the field for most of their last two games and both times they turned in an amazing performance.

Sure, they gave up points, it happens, but they made teams work for it they weren’t getting gashed with big plays and played their positions well. On top of that they were not penalized all that much in those two games and did everything they could to help their team win.

As for the offense it’s no secret that they have been struggling to start this season. They lost a few seniors to graduation and are still trying to find their identity.

The Wildcats have always been a rushing team and know how to run the football effectively. But when the run gets stuffed, and they have to move the ball another way they struggled so far this season, and it was the same story for the Rice game.

But the positive from this week is that while the Wildcats lost, they both ran and threw the ball efficiently and effectively. Before this game quarterback Huxton Kloesel had thrown the football a total of 17 times, on Friday he threw the ball 13 times.

He completed seven of those 13 passes (54%) for 104 yards and a touchdown on Friday night and found four different receivers while doing it. Collin Morrison, Camden Morrison, Zach Norrell, Ty Chmelik and Ace Mesa each caught a pass from Kloesel with Chmelik being the recipient of the touchdown pass.

In all fairness quarterback is not Kloesel’s original position and he plays on both offense and defense. So it makes sense to not throw the ball too much and keep him out of harm’s way because he is an extremely valuable member of the Wildcats team.

The rushing attack was effective as always for the Wildcats as they recorded 191 yards on the ground. But to see the passing attack finally come to life for the Wildcats is exciting and something fans can expect more of when they return from their bye week.

The Wildcats will get a full week of rest before they come back on Friday, Oct. 4, to host Schulenburg in Weimar.
