RICE RAIDERS 24, HALLETTSVILLE BRAHMAS 6
The Rice Raiders improved to 4-0 this week when they defeated the Hallettsville Brahmas 24-6 on Friday night.
The Raiders defense finally gave up their first points of the season but made sure they never saw the endzone for the rest of the game.
The Raiders defense remained aggressive, and their defensive line continued to cause problems for opposing quarterbacks. Deveron Bennett is a major factor on that defensive line causing all kinds of issues in both the rushing and passing game for Hallettsville.
Their secondary is equally as impressive with so many athletic and physical defensive backs ensuring that their side of the field is a no-fly zone. The Raiders held the Brahmas in check despite giving up six points which allowed their offense to find their rhythm.
With the defense slamming the door the offense was able to go right to work. They moved their way slowly but strategically down the field.
Hal lettsvi l le’s pass rush was dominant and in Raiders’ quarterback, Kordae Johnson’s face all game long. The Raiders’ passing attack suffered because of it, Johnson completed 11 of his 22 pass attempts (50%) for 138 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
D’Neriyan Fuller again led all Raider receivers with four catches for 70 yards.
The Raiders offense found some success, but they had to do it on the ground. Armed with a group of seven running backs, Raiders head coach Brad Dumont went to work playing good old fashioned smashmouth football.
The Raiders’ offensive line deserves a ton of credit for this win because of how much work they had to do. On 32 carries the Raiders recorded 160 yards and three touchdowns, none of which is possible if the offensive line did not do their job.
Dyren Johnson led the way of the Raiders rushing attack with 17 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown. Kordae Johnson also utilized his legs to find the endzone along with RJ Myers, they combined for seven carries for 19 yards.
The Raiders are off to their best start to the football season in a while and intend to keep this momentum going in week 5 when they take on Boling on Friday, Sept. 27, at Raider Stadium.
