LA GRANGE – The Columbus Cardinals’ track team got a number of top performances during an early-season meet last week. The varsity team finished with a number of medals and had several near misses as well. All of their performances combined to make up for a strong overall outing from Columbus as they continue to try to turn some of those near misses into medals.
The Lady Cards were led by a number of good performances from a short list of competitors. Chloe Ross finished with the top overall placement, taking first place in the 1600m run. Kaylea Foster also earned points from that event with a fourth-place finish. Scarlett McClelland had a great day individually and secured many points for the team score. She had her best finish in the long jump with a silver medal, and she took home the bronze medal in the 200m dash. She took fifth place in the triple jump competition as well as fourth place in the 100m sprint. Mariah Woods finished right behind McClelland in that race, taking the fifth spot in the short-distance dash.
The boys’ team picked up an impressive six medals from their outing last week. Daegan Stevens and Ty’Vone Whitehead were the top performers with Stevens taking gold in shot put and Whitehead claiming gold in the triple jump. Whithead had a number of strong races and solid performances, taking second place in both the long jump and the 100m sprint. Whitehead combined his strengths with Xavior Woods, Jarden Dillard and Carson Beettner to take second place in the 4X200m relay race. Woods, Dillard and Whitehead also claimed the bronze in the 4X100m race, this time with Rafael Gonzalez. The Cards had a few competitors claim points for the team despite just missing out on a medal. Woods finished in fourth place for the high jump, while Josafat Galvan took fourth place for the imposing, 3200m race.
