Connor Schulman medaled at the recent conference indoor track and field championship.
The Texas A & M University senior earned a bronze medal in the 60-meter hurdles at the Southeastern Conference indoor championship.
It was the Rice Consol idated High School graduate’s first medal at a conference indoor or outdoor championship. He was named to the all-conference second team.
Schulman was second in the preliminary heat with a time of 7.70 seconds. “That was a new personal best,” he said. “It’s always hard to replicate that.”
He has recovered from a torn hamstring suffered during the 2021 outdoor season. The injury affected his results in the 2021-22 season, when he had three top-3 finishes in the 60 hurdles and three top-3 results in the 110 hurdles of the outdoor season. He had one win in each distance.
“It took me all of last year to get back,” he said. “I had to rest for a long time. I really didn’t have a good base last year.”
This season he has been working on his starts, which he said historically have not been the best. “I’m actually having a competitive start now,” he said.
Schulman prefers the 110 event, which has 10 hurdles to the five in the 60 meters. “I do get faster as the hurdles progress,” he said.
He plans to complete his final year of eligibility in the coming academic year, as he said he will be enrolled in a master’s program at the school.
“I think I definitely came in with pretty low expectations. I have reset where my goals are,” he said, noting that his main goals are to win at a conference championship and to score at a national championship.
