Elections: Rumor versus reality

Rumor: dead people are voting Reality

Voter Registrars get information regarding deceased voters from a variety of government resources:

• Social Security Administration

• Death Certificates

• Jury Information

• Probate Records Voter Registrars take initiatives to be proactive on voter list maintenance by:

• Checking obituaries

• Research county records

• Voter rolls in Colorado County are worked daily.

What you can do

• If a family member passes away and you are taking care of their final business, it is helpful to report it to the election office.

• An individual is required to show a picture ID when they vote in person.

• Individuals voting by mail have a signature and ID verification process.

• If an absentee ballot is returned before a person dies there is a verification process to determine if that vote should be counted.

• If you receive a piece of election literature in the mail for a deceased family member it does no harm to call and check status of their voter registration with our office, however, please remember many of the third parties sending this type of information out have VERY old voter registration rosters.
