The Rice Raiders’ soccer team has been jockeying for position in the district standings as they compete through an up-anddown season. The Raiders experienced both the lows and highs of the season after a pair of games last week. Rice followed a difficult loss with one of their best wins of the year as the regular season draws near a close.
The Raiders started their week with a big loss to the second- place team in the standings, Bay City. Rice’s offensive attack could not create many opportunities against the high-pressure defense, and the Raiders failed to score a goal in the big defeat. Conversely, Bay City found a lot of success offensively as they cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Raiders.
Rice recovered nicely from their difficult loss with one of the season’s strongest wins against a Wharton team that sits just behind Rice in the district standings. The Raiders matched their season-high with four goals in a game that came down to a tense second half. While Rice allowed a high number of opportunities as well, their offense proved to be the deciding element as it helped them hold on for a 4-3 victory, their tightest of the season.
