Lady Cards take a bow at State Semis to end historic season

Columbus ran into a stout opponent when they faced the Holliday Lady Eagles on Thursday, March 2. The Lady Cards fell to their opponents in a difficult 59-40 defeat, but they had no lost pride as competed admirably and took their final bow at the hands of the eventual State Champions.

It did not take long for Holliday to claim their advantage over the Lady Cards as they came out on fire offensively and had a solid defensive game plan in the first half. The Lady Eagles scored a game-high 21 points in the first quarter while holding Columbus to just eight points. The Lady Cards locked in defensively in the next period by holding Holliday to eight points themselves, but they also managed just four points in the second as they went into halftime with a 29-9 deficit on the scoreboard. Columbus left the halftime break with increased intensity as they outscored the Lady Eagles 16-10 in the third as shots began to fall. The Lady Cards followed the third with another double- digit, scoring period in the fourth, but the Lady Eagles responded with another 20-point quarter to put the game on ice.

Karlee Mathis and Ally Tribe led the way for the Lady Cards on the scoring end. Mathis finished with 11 points, while Tribe finished with 10 as the only players to score into the double digits during the game. The seniors provided the rest of the scoring as Bailey Gustus, Treasure Upson and Madyson Carter combined for 19 points.

The Lady Cards complete their historic season with a final overall record of 31-5 with an undefeated, 14-0 district record.
